Rise

A live audio broadcast at dawn.

RISE was conceived and developed during lockdown by yello brick Producer Alison John, Hannah McPake (freelance artist/Gaggle Babble) and yello brick Creative Director Julian Sykes. RISE was a dream like voyage that provoked the listener to reconnect with both themselves and the world around them exploring themes of ritual, myth and connectivity.

The experience took place in three parts:

PART 1 - A package through the post.
PART 2 - A live audio broadcast at dawn featuring a performer broadcasting live accompanied by pre-recorded composition.
PART 3 - A video link sent by email to participants after the broadcast that revealed more of the narrative of the story.

The live audio broadcast took place at dawn, a time that marks the beginning of twilight before sunrise, where it is said the boundary between worlds is at its thinnest. Where multiple universes and possibilities exist and time seems to stand still. And is perhaps a time many people don’t usually experience or witness during their everyday routines. Experienced at home, RISE invited people to sit near a window or in their garden and listen with headphones to the broadcast via mobile app.

We were interested in ways in which we could use digital as a medium to create meaningful connections between people and place (micro & macro). This project aimed to connect people regardless of their location to share in a collective act of watching the sunrise. And to perhaps experience some of the magic of the everyday; the shifting of darkness to light.

We developed accessible prototype versions of the experience for deaf, blind and partially sighted audiences. The experience is accessible in many ways: to people who are unable to leave their homes either due to COVID or other circumstances. An initial small test/trial broadcast of the project was done in December 2020 with an invited audience. We engaged with people in the UK and with audience members tuning in from Sweden, South Africa and France attending December’s broadcast.
